How to Repair Asphalt Cracks

Aug 20, 2021 | Asphalt Production

Asphalt cracks are simple to repair when you know what you’re doing. You need the correct kind of patching material, and the size of the crack will determine the products you use.

To repair asphalt cracks, begin the process by pulling off any weeds growing out of the crevices. Next, use a strong spray from a garden hose to clean the gap. If the crack is deep, fill 3/4 of it with sand. Next, apply the patching compound for asphalt driveway cracks and wait for it to dry. Finish by applying a latex sealant.

Use Patching Material

When asphalt driveways start to crack, you can use asphalt patching to fix the problem. The method is cost-effective and protects the driveway’s foundation.

The patching material uses unique products. For example, you can use a crack filler to repair cracks that are less than half an inch and asphalt patches for larger cracks.

Here are the steps to follow when repairing asphalt cracks.

Step 1: Cleaning the Surface

Use compressed air to blow the debris and dirt away, repeating the process. Wire brushes will help remove other sticky debris and parts with oil spots.

Step 2: Drying Thoroughly

Fill the gap during dry seasons to ensure no moisture is left in the crack. If the temperatures are below the dew point, use a hot air lance to ensure the entire area is dry before applying anything to the crack.

Step 3: Prepping the Filler

Mix the materials in the filler bottle by shaking it thoroughly. However, shaking depends on the viscosity of the product and the package. Cut the top of the spout, but ensure the width is smaller than the hairline cracks.

Step 4:  Filling the Crack

Fill the crack with a rubberized asphalt-emulsion filler and ensure it only gets into the gap. Then, apply it using a caulking gun to avoid staining the outer parts of the driveway. Ensure the part completely dries before you drive over.

Hire Someone For Bigger Jobs

Cracks and potholes that are over two inches wide could need replacement which should be done by a professional. Also, if you’re not sure about your skills, hiring a professional will get the job done.
